Keeps our dog off the sofa
We were so tired of putting small furniture on our sofas to keep our large dog off of them while we are gone. She stinks up the sofa and causes giant wet spots where she licks. We decided to try these and WOW, they are perfect! She must have tried to get on once in the beginning because we found one on the floor early on, but mustn't have liked it because she never tried it again. It's been months and she sleeps in her own bed when we are away from the house. I can't believe how well these work! I wish we had them sooner. They are a life saver, or should I say a sofa-saver. (My cat doesn't mind them. He won't last on them, but will occasionally walk across them.)

    And they are WORKING!!! I have the cheaper, hard version which folds in half, for the seat cushions, and the more expensive flexible version to drape over the top of the backrest cushions on my front porch chairs. Since I'm off-the-scale allergic to cats, and neighborhood cats used to think spending the night on my cushions was the "cat's meow", I'm very happy these are working so well! Sure, I have to take them off and set them aside before I use the chairs, but that's a small price to pay, to be able to use the chairs any time we want. It took me 7 washings (4 times scrubbing with a brush in the utility sink and 3 more times in the frontloader washing machine) to get the black cat hair off my cushion covers the previous year. I thought I'd have to keep the cushions stored in the garage, and only get them out when I wanted to use the front porch! Was not happy at the thought of that! I did a ton of research, and decided these were worth trying. They do not cover every square inch of the cushions, there is probably 4 inches along the front of the seat cushion, and 2" along each side, that are not covered by this mat. However, that isn't a large enough area for an animal to lay, without falling off. Sure, the slightly flexible spikes are not anything I'd want to sit on in less than heavy denim jeans, so they would be uncomfortable to pets... some people say this is cruelty to animals, but it's not going to harm an animal. They would have to put their weight on these spikes for quite a while, before there would be any chance of harm. Most animals will jump off in a nanosecond, because it's unpleasant. I have read that some animals (extremely heavily furred?) like laying on the spikes. I can't confirm it, but if humans can lay on a "bed of nails" then I suppose.... :-)

    Against my better judgement, my wife decided to allow our cute little 10 week old puppy on all the furniture to snuggle and play. Well the cute little snuggle pup soon turned into a 65lb fur missile launching herself onto unsuspecting humans sitting on the couch at random intervals. In addition, she would use the ottomans as intermediate launch stations to gain extra lift and velocity.

    Not being a fan of the electrified systems out there (just seemed a little too medieval), I opted for what I call the spike strip approach. Got several of these mats & they work great! I put them on the ottomans as a test and placed the pup's paw on them as a warning. She did not like that at all, but like all pups she has a short memory. One circus vault onto said ottoman was enough to cure her! No longer launching onto family and guests.

    The spikes are not sharp enough to do any damage to her paws, but they are not comfortable! I think it is the surprise factor more than the discomfort that worked in our case. There are definitely other ways to train your dog to stay off the furniture, but if you've been a bad human, these can help you get control back quickly.

    BTW - they fold for storage which is a nice plus.

    I’m not including a pic of dogs on the couch while these are in place because they work! Our home is home to a German Shepherd, a German Shorthaired Pointer, and a little shitzu mix demon. All 3 love to love the couch and while we could keep them off when we were around, the minute we’re out the door it was like teenagers throwing a boring party. Our couch had become the dog bed. So, when we bought a new couch, we knew we had to do something. Once these were in place it took one time for each dog to jump up on the couch to discover just how uncomfortable the hard plastic points are. So, for us, this was a good buy. Although, because the schitzu demon doesn’t shed, we still allow him up to snuggle in beside us. He just can’t do it while we’re gone now.
