UPDATE:
So I think I've figured out what the problem was (look at the review below).
The bottle comes screwed on to a little plastic piece that is detachable from the water bowl. By removing this piece, I can remove the bottle without having to unscrew the bottle. Since I've figured this out, I've had NO problems with the water level being too high or sloshing out. The piece must have not fit properly before, causing there to be too much gap between the bottle and bowl. Once I snapped the gap up, I've not had ANY problems. I've switched out the bottles for cleanliness, and everything is working perfectly!
BTW, I received the red bottle. It's just perfect.
I've got a 16 year old dog and gone through many water bottles like this one.
Last one I used had weird grooves and was impossible to clean under. This one has no such grooves and is very easy to get totally clean. The bottle is a nice generic size so interchangeable with other water bottles, so i don't have to worry about cleaning it.
So regarding the cleaning part of this item, it's a 5-star.
I had to dock down two stars for it being a little weird though. With other bottles I've used in the past, I would fill up the bottle, turn the bowl upside down, screw it on, then turn the who divide back up. The water would slowly seep in to the bowl. Slow enough, in fact, that I would usually pour water on the bowl so my waiting dog could get water right away.
This bottle is weird, though. I would fill it up, screw it on, and turn it over, but the water will gush out all at once. The bottle is so small that almost half of the bottle will be poured onto the bowl at once. Sometimes the bowl is filled way up to the brim, making it very difficult to move it to the floor where it belongs without sloshing water. And I'm worried that the water will overflow anyway, although that hasn't happened yet.
i've also tried replacing the bottle with a 2liter soda bottle as other members have mentioned below. The above phenomena remains, plus the bottle wrinkles up. Usable, but weird and esthetically unpleasant. And a little worrisome.
I'm not sure what the deal is and what the solution may be, but i'm sure there's some design flaw.
