- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI love this and all of Myra Savant Harris' books. I never whelp without them! And have them on hand for review and quick look up even once labor is underway. I like to tab with post-its and highlite parts I feel are important for what I might experience or can't remember well when I'm stressed in the midst. This book greatly increases your chances of saving a newborn puppy in distress. (There is no greater heartbreak than a lost pup! It's heartwrenching.) This book teaches so much. For example, it tells about how and why a pup rejected by its mother is not as good as dead and/or not otherwise healthy! Far from it! It is very matter of fact, practical and step by step, covering a variety of scenarios. It also explains amongst many other things how to administer oxygen. Although I do not use oxygen (so far), I still found that section interesting and education for a time when I might go that route. Regardless, there is plenty of other content to help you survive the gravest of pup-mergencies. Also, reading Myra's books greatly enhances confidence which makes the owner and the mama more relaxed throughout. This book helps you feel ready for just about anything. It is not meant to be veterinary advice or replace veterinary care, but rather helps you know what you can handle on your own, avoiding needless vet trip, and helps save pups when it is impossible to get to a vet on time. I could go on and on. I swear by Myra's books. P.S. For the commenter who said there's did not come with a dvd, I would suggest contact Myra Savant Harris (she's on Facebook) and seeing what can be done. Also Myra has her own website and you can order through that instead of Amazon, and then if you're not satisfied you can deal directly with her. http://www.myrasavantharris.com/
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm a first time breeder and reading all three books in the series gave me a wealth of knowledge and I feel a little more comfortable going into delivering my first litter
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2007Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe lady that wrote this is an RN that has helped countless women deliver babies. She has since become a dog breeder and has now helped save lots of puppies. She not only tells you what equipment you need but will actually sell it to you herself for what I think is a pretty fair price. She even gives you her e-mail address so you can send her questions through her e-mail. This book comes with a DVD that brings to life what she teaches you how to do in the book. All in all this is the only book that has ever made me feel like I will know what to do when I have a crisis with newborn puppies. In the book this lady says you can reduce your mortality rate by 20%! That's a lot! She says the average amount of puppies that die in infancy is 30% and that you can get it down to 10%. This book is so inexpensive that I think you can't afford to NOT buy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2012Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is an excellent book and I would highly recommend it to other breeders. It gives you the confidence and knowledge to fight to save the life of every puppy. Breeding Dogs is not an easy task, Now there is a book that can give you help with the puppies, especially when a problem occurs and you are alone in a snow storm late at night with no vet.
I not only own a copy for myself in paperback but I purchased a copy for my Kindle so that I can refresh myself when a litter is due, and I don't have the book with me. I also recently purchased a copy for a friend who has never bred toy dogs before.
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI am a first time breeder and learned that sadly 30% of newborn puppies die. This book went the extra mile to put my worries of "what if's...." more at ease in helping me feel prepared for just about anything that could go wrong. The author shows such things as how and when to give your newborn puppies tube feedings, shots to hydrate, and oxygen. I really liked the warming box concept too!
However, I reluctantly gave this book only 4 stars instead of 5 because in the DVD that is included she shows how to remove the dew claws on the newborns. I had never considered doing this before and ordered the tool used to remove them. But with further consideration I decided this was definitely NOT what I want for my puppies! I wondered why would you want to surgically remove something that God gave them? I've observed my own havanese use her dew claws to scratch her face and ears. I also reviewed clippings on YouTube explaining why dogs need their dew claws. I am now convinced that it really is up to the owners to not neglect to trim the dew claws regularly as you would the other nails to prevent complications. And only have a vet remove them as a last resort if your dog sustains repeated injuries from them.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book and dvd are great! I learned so much. I have been through having puppies before and thought i knew a lot but i had soo much more to learn. This book is so informative, easy to read and to understand. Once i stared reading i didn't want to put it down! This is a must have for any breeder or anyone expecting puppies. I have been through losing puppies and that was so hard. I feel much more informed and confident now that i have this book! Wish i had this years ago. You will not be disappointed if you order. Thank you Myra!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseOut of a litter of 6 pups we had 5 survive on our first birthing experience for a rescue mom. I can honestly say without this book the surviving pups would have been 3 instead of 5. We had to deal with major bleeding issues and breech births that were handled successfully due to this book. Also, a few of the pups seemed to need some help to get started breathing and this book helped us prepare to help rather than hurt them. The dvd is very helpful, too, for knowing what supplies to have on hand in case of problems and for making a warm travel box. Thanks, all five are thriving now.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt was a great read. But wasn't really needed to have puppies. The mother dog does most of the work. I made a whelping box and that came from the book and turned out great thanks to the book. But at the end of the day, the supplies weren't all needed and I was glad that decided not to buy over half the things it was telling me to buy. Made the box and a heated blanket and used comforter and some white rags and that was it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very practical information.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseEven after breeding dogs for 25 years there’s always something to learn. No waffle just practical information. Cd is a very good idea for those unsure of tube feeding or sub cut injections. Even if you save one puppy it’s worth the buy. 👍🏻

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't expect to needed, but was glad I had read it!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI had just gone through the book when the mother dog went into crisis early and needed an emergency c-section and I ended up needing a warming box and to know how to tube feed my puppies. The book also had a DVD that reviewed the information and that was helpful too. The puppy gagged a lot more than I expected when attempting tube feeding, and the first time it was nerve racking, fearing I might kill the puppy by getting the tube in the wrong place, but it got easier. The book goes into oxygen and many other things that long term breeders I spoke to have never ever used. I had most of the equipment she recommeneded and was ready for the 9 puppies when they came and I had to take manage puppy care for 3 days straight until mom was finally ready to start taking over, but she was ill and needed to be watched closely. I had to suppliment feed as well and weigh them daily as she teaches. I never lost a puppy, but it was hard work and I referenced the book often. The book has info you will likely never use - my vet said he has practiced 52 year and never did sub Q injections for dehydration. He says no one at this clinic does this so he didn't want me doing it. Tube feeding was enough.
