About the author

Dr. Ian Dunbar is one of the world's most respected experts on dog training and behavior.
He grew up on a farm in the English countryside training cows, chickens and yes, dogs using time-honored lure reward training techniques learned from his family.
He went on to receive his veterinary degree from the Royal Veterinary College at London University and his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1982, he designed and taught the world's very first off-leash puppy socialization and training classes – SIRIUS® Puppy Training. These puppy classes would go on to become immensely popular and imitated all around the world.
The success and popularity of these classes ultimately revolutionized the world of dog training by putting a much needed focus on puppyhood and easy, enjoyable, and effective methods, at a time when most training was boring and unpleasant.
Subsequently, Ian went on to create and develop the San Francisco SPCA's Animal Behavior Department, he started the American Kennel Club's Gazette "Behavior" column, which he wrote for seven years, and he designed and organized the K9 GAMES®.
In 1993, he founded the Association of Professional Dog Trainers. With over 5000 members in 48 countries, the APDT has grown to be the world's largest association of dog trainers.
He has authored numerous books and videos, including five seasons of Dogs with Dunbar, a popular television program in the UK. He has given over one thousand seminars and workshops around the world and has been instrumental in the rise of reward-based, fun and games, scientifically sound dog training methods.
Currently, his online courses, seminars, and workshops are available from DunbarAcademy.com

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2002Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWhat can I say, but "bravo" on another great series of books, "Before You Get Your Puppy and After You Get Your Puppy". It goes without saying that Ian is a mentor to me and many others! Through his straight-forward and honest teachings, I've evolved as trainer. He's unique, original and confident enough to continue to evolve himself. His other books and video series are a "must have" for any serious trainers. I met Ian about 15 years ago at a workshop and then at APDT conferences. To say that he has guided me and is a valued mentor is not enough. He wrote the foreword for my book, Train Your Dog, Change Your Life, encouraged and challenged me! Without Ian, I would never have gotten this published. He encouraged me! He believed in my idea and gave me the confidence to just "do it". The basis of my book comes from the seeds that he planted, blossoming with my own wisdom and style. He launches sparks that ignite your brain waves ... he encourages open-mindedness. In the process, we learn about ourselves. For that I'm forever grateful and STRONGLY RECOMMEND any of his books and videos. For the novice, these two small paperbacks will guide you before you get your pup, then take you into basics training after you get your pup. They will "wake you up" and teach you how reward based behavior training is the "only way" and especially with pups. Maureen Ross, MA, NCC, CPDT, Director of Dog Talk & TheraPet, ...

- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a great tool for dogs and puppies! Ian Dunbar is pretty realistic and straightforward. I suggest using this book along with a couple of others you have researched. There are many ways to train you, your family and your dog. I usually think of 4-5 (or more) questions that I'd like the answers to or problems I anticipate depending on the animal's basic personality, especially if you adopt. Look up the answers in the books to see if they are realistic and you are willing to do what is required of you. If you don't want the dog doing the same thing in a couple of months to a year later you better get a handle on it now! Early training (within reason) makes for a great life together! Old dogs can learn new tricks, it just may take a bit longer. Every day is a new opportunity. You won't regret it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAlthough I have had a number of dogs during my adult life, it has been 20 years since I’ve raised a puppy. I just picked up a new puppy last week and if you follow the directions in the book, it works out. Potty training has improved significantly since I started to religiously follow the book instead of occasionally following directions. It may have been a number of years since the book was written, but its principles still hold true.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseBy far the best new puppy book out there. Easy to read and implement training. If every new puppy owner read this book there would be a lot less dogs ending up in shelters.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2011Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI thought this book was very readable, and full of good, practical information. Yes, there is some repetition of key points, but I even liked that. After reading, I felt I retained 99% of the info, and that even family members with less interest in having the puppy turn out super would both read and retain the key points. A great book for getting the whole family on-board with proven puppy-rearing methods.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI found this book very helpful, although by the time I found this book and had it shipped my puppy was already here and we had been doing some things "wrong" ...I recommend buying this book if you don't already have a puppy, so the title is a little misleading.
