Give your puppy a head start! 51 Puppy Tricks gives you the tools you need to teach your puppy essential skills, helpful behaviors, and fantastic tricks through step-by-step instructions and photographs. Tricks and tips are specifically designed for your puppy's developing mind and body.
The first two years of your puppy's life are a crucial time in his or her development. By teaching your puppy early and using positive reinforcement methods, you will instill in him or her a cooperative spirit and a lifetime love of learning. Instead of focusing on curbing bad behaviors, this guide will help you establish a lifetime bond with your puppy as you teach skills ranging from beginner ("come," "stay") tomore advanced ("tidy up toys into a box,"fetch the newspaper").
Positive reinforcement methods are the fastest and easiest way to teach a puppy. These anxiety-free methods produce a joyful puppy who is a willing partner in the learning process. Trick training builds relationships by deepening communication pathways, trust, and mutual respect. It offers a way to bond with your puppy as you strive toward common goals and delight in your successes. The trust and cooperative spirit developed through this process will last a lifetime.
Step-by-step instruction guides you through the simple steps of teaching a trick. Troubleshooting ideas and tips provide solutions to common real-world challenges. Photos of every step of the training process show you exactly what to do and take the guesswork out of teaching.
The chapters cover:
- Preliminary Skills: respond to a clicker, kennel up, find me, and more.
- Body Positions: sit, down, crawl, roll over, kisses, and more.
- Coordination: tunnel, teeter board, hoop jump, flying disc, and more.
- Communication: ring a bell to go outside, leave it, sit before chowtime, and more.
- Shape Behavior: fetch, open the door, hide your eyes, and more.
- Chaining: litter in the step can, soda from the fridge, mail from the mailbox, and more.
An appendix lists the tricks by skill level so you can find the just the right tricks to teach your puppy. A glossary of terms ensures you'll know exactly what is being discussed.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 201051 Puppy tricks is a very good book. It goes through very simple motions for training your puppy some really cool, but simple, tricks! It is chock full of colorful pictures and step-by-step instructions on how to train your puppy. It shows where and when to use the clicker, hand signals to use, and what word commands to use.
I would suggest this book for anyone who has a puppy that they want to start training. This is a great way to bond with your puppy and give him a head start. It is simple tricks, taught in simple ways for your puppy to be able to understand better. It is laid out in such a simple way that even a child could train their puppy.
However, if you have an older dog, I would suggest 101 dog tricks for him. 101 Dog Tricks is more advanced training for a dog, not a puppy. It is a very good book as well. I would recommend them both if you really want to start training from puppy-hood to adult dog-hood. Both are very easy for the trainer to understand and read. I have personally enjoyed them, as well as my sister who is a more advanced dog trainer. 51 Puppy tricks has a lot of great tips in it on training puppies for the experienced and in-experienced trainer alike!
51 puppy tricks is specifically for puppy training. I would recommend it to starters and advanced people alike! It is a great way to start your puppy out right in a really fun way!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2011I bought this book for myself when we got our new puppy in August 2010. I've loved it and my puppy loves learning the tricks :) We have a couple of Kyra Sundance's other books as well, but this one is great for puppies. Some of the tricks are "beginner level" tricks, such as teaching them to walk across a board but not actually doing a teeter-totter since puppies shouldn't be doing a full teeter-totter yet. I liked it so much I bought a copy for my 12 year old cousin when she got a new puppy too. You will need a clicker and small, soft treats for training.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2017Fun and easy to follow to teach your pup lots of cool tricks and also helps you to bond with your dog. My little girl, Margo, has mastered half the book already! My only complaint is that it would be nice to have additional troubleshooting options. The ones that are already in there are usually helpful, but only address one particular problem with one particular solution. And I've encountered other issues that aren't addressed in the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2019Love! These books! Super simple to follow, the pictures and steps make it easy to understand how to get your pet to achieve the trick. Taught my 3month old puppy the concept of stay after just an afternoon. When she was 4 months we learned how to turn around and shake. We are working on staying on her raised spot and why it is important. Not only are the tricks fun to learn but they are building an understanding of who is in charge and how to learn, for both of us.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2014This book is incredible. I used it to train my young Connemara Terrier, and this book made it very easy for me. Each new trick builds on what is learned in earlier tricks. Also, for more difficult tricks, it teaches how to train in "pieces," making it easy for the dog to understand and learn. Some tricks can be learned in just one or two tries, and some took a couple weeks to get it perfect. Now my terrier not only shows off for friends and neighbors, but also does tricks for kids at the libraries and in hospitals. Great confidence builder for the dog. Get the book! If for no other reason than it's so much fun for dog and trainer!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2012I'll preface this review by saying the fact that I can compare this book to several other puppy/dog training books probably says a lot about me (aka perhaps I should get a life ;).
All in all, I found this book helpful -- fun to look through, lots of pictures. It's a nice thing to pick up while you're watching t.v. or taking a pee. That said, there's not that much too it. Most of the content is pretty standard in any puppy class (sit, down, stay, lure, etc). Some of the tricks are neat, and I don't think I'd have found them elsewhere unless I was looking (crawl, hide your eyes). Some of the tricks are things I'm not sure I want to teach my puppy (open the cabinet), but that's personal preference I guess :).
That said, there's really not enough content to warrant the price tag, in my opinion. Pictures are nice, but for my dollar, if you want to learn how to train your pup I'd opt for either:
A) The books that every dog trainer tells you to read:
-Jean Donaldson's Culture Clash,
-Patricial McConnel's The Other End of the Leash,
-Karen Pryor's Don't Shoot the Dog
OR
B) Some cliff's notes version of those books (e.g. Imagine Life with a Well-Behaved Dog)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2020I love this book!! My puppy eats his food VERY fast, so for dinner I get him to slow down by making him learn tricks from this book for his food. Everyone is so impressed with how many tricks he knows at such a young age. Typically he can pick up on a new trick in just 1 evening, and then we work on reviewing other tricks he learned previously. This book makes it very easy to teach tricks and to use the "clicker" method. I've found that by making this part of our routine he is eager to learn and listen to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2020This is a great book but by the time I received it I had already taught my puppy most of the tricks. It has great advice about how to shape a behavior so that was helpful. The instructions for the tricks are very clear and simple. There are color photographs reinforcing how to do the tricks. I would recommend this book for novices in dog training.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely helpful book with great pictures.
Love this book - perfect for both adults and children. It has a big range of tricks, easy step by step instructions with beautiful photos all the way through. It has helped my improve walking my dog on a lead, settling it down when over excited and a few hilarious tricks.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too many props needed
I bought this book looking for some ideas for fun tricks to teach our puppy, beyond the standards that I already knew. This book has some interesting tricks, but requires a lot of props or special equipment. For example, open a door, close a door and retrieve a soda from the fridge constitute 3 tricks, but what if I don't have a fridge door that a dog can open?! Similarly other tricks require mailboxes, small basketbalp hoops, skateboards, toyboxes that open, etc.
This book does have some info on clicker training, shaping and chaining for those inexperienced with this type of training, but it feels too superficial for someone with experience in dog training, and yet too basic for a total novice. Lots of cute picures, but even the little "doggie commentaries" are too cutesie and get annoying after a few pages. In general, this book looks pretty but doesn't feel like it offers much useful substance when you really look at it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My puppy is learning new tricks !! yeey !
Good book, easy to read and easy to understand. It doesn't waste words into explaining too much, a couple of sentences and pictures, which is all you really need. It's giving us a lot of fun moments with our puppy!

Eine gute Mischung aus praktischen und lustigen Tricks und Alltagsfähigkeiten, sehr gut beschrieben und mit lustigen Bildern und "Kommentaren" der Hunde versehen.
