- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2024I'm prepping to have a litter of puppies. Unfortunately, my mentor was supposed to whelp my first litter and help me. She has a demanding new day time job and is unable to whelp the litter for me.
I'm a special needs (human) mom and I understand not everything always goes as planned. I'm trying to learn and prepare as much as I can for any scenario. I understand not every puppy will survive but with these books they give you everything you need to know to help save a pup.
I've read other books but they never really went into the real details of what could happen. All 3 books on this series have given so much information on what to possibly expect in the worst case scenario.
I'll be re reading these books when it's time to breed my female.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2018This is definitely the best and most compassionate advice on whelping pups. Seriously this is the only book on this subject that I have EVER read that really explains why a pup may be a so-called “runt” and helpful things you can do to give him a chance. And she has suggestions on how to help these little guys along and it works. I have NEVER bought into the pervasive notion (based in no fact what so ever) that “ if a pup is born weak and doesn’t rally in a few days to just let it die because it would never be any good anyway”! C’mon folks, welcome to enlightened dog breeding and the 21 st century !!! We successfully raised a cleft palate pup who became a wonderful pet. And I don’t like to bury baby pups like some other authors apparently do. Those “runt” pups can and do grow up to be great dogs and cherished pets and I can prove it. Enjoy this well written, factual book presented by a licensed nurse.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2018Love, love, love Myras' approach to whelping. Whelping has become so much more relaxed for me and my girls and they take their time, I hang out with them, but completely prepared for an emergency should it arrive such as a stuck pup because they can and do happen and I'm speaking from experience and didn't have to have a c-section like my old book recommended. Yikes😮 She outlines a great guide for when to intervene and when to stay completely relaxed and give nature the chance to do what it's meant to do. Great feeding guidelines and how to keep your c-section rates down to 0 for what we call "free whelpers." Sorry Brachychephalic breeds, this doesn't include you unfortunately. And love the Pudding it was the one thing my girl didn't refuse and got her milk flowing. Myra emails you back too if you have questions. Thank you Myra. We review this book prior to each whelping to keep it fresh in our memory so we can be at our best for our girls.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2021This book helped me successfully naturally breed my bitch for the first time. Though I did learn a lot from other research online as well. I have also read “The Whelping and Rearing of Puppies A complete Practical Guide” and Myra’s book is by far better/more useful information. If you are going to read one book, it should be this book. Absolutely grateful for her experience and information. Gives me confidence that my bitch will be safe and I will know what to do when she whelps here very soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2012I purchased all three of Harris's books and although I'm not a novice dog breeder, I picked up lots of valuable information from the interesting and easy to read books. I would recommend these books for anyone who is into dog breeding. Harris, coming from the human medical field, often references the similarities of human and canine which adds to the readability. I made notes as I read and made changes per her recommendations for my last litter and truly believe my dam had an easier whelp due to these changes. I had one semi-emergency with an umbilical bleed out and thanks to her suggestions and list of supplies to have on hand, averted the disaster of losing a sweet little puppy. Another of the hints she gave, to use sage to help dry up my dam's milk after weaning, worked wonderfully. The cost of the books was worth that one tip, and that's just one of many.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2014Common sense ideas....except the ideas are not common sense, until you read them and a light bulb goes off in your head! I have been breeding, first with my parents and then on my own, for more than 40 years and I LEARNED NEW STUFF in this book. I'm now checking to see if there are any close seminars. And no, I've never met the author. But I do show, breed, and perform in rally and obedience, so I am very tied into the dog community which is where I heard about her.
This book is not only for the members of the dog fancy, it is good knowledge for people everywhere dealing with a pregnant dog and puppies.
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2014The author, Myra Savant-Harris, has written a thorough and detailed book on intensive care of puppies. I have two copies, one of which includes a 32 minutes DVD illustrating various methods of the care she discusses. Its main problem is that it is intended for serious breeders of dogs. Neophytes may find it very useful depending on their level of experience with sick or orphan puppies. Some of the supplies and equipment recommended are probably too expensive to consider for the pet breeder.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2014I thought this book was good. I read it and found that it had some really good tips and advise. The reason I am giving it 4 stars is that it is really, really heavy on "human" info. Most of the info in the book talks about when woman have babies and how the nurses help them, watch them for signs of labor, and general OB info. I thought it was good information, and a lot of it is interesting...but it is just a lot more info about humans than I was expecting. It is a good book and I would recommend it... I wouldn't buy it again though. I will however try another from this author as she came highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for a dog breeder
Another one of her books to own if your dog is having a litter. It’s important to gain as much knowledge as you can for the safety of your bitch and her puppies. Another great book to have is ‘The Book of the Bitch’

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the clever dog breeder/exhibitor.
Bought these on the advice of another exhibitor and wow now it all makes sense.
Clever insightful easy to read literature.
You will wonder how you managed before.
Makes the science less scientific.
