- Reviewed in the United States on September 7, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe advice in this book was just what I needed. At 11 months, one of my two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels was still not house trained. I had even thought she was at one point, where she had even gone as long as 30 days without an accident, but then she regressed, and started having accidents throughout the house. I had her checked and there was nothing medically wrong. Using the advice in this book, I determined I'd given her too much of the house too early. I relocated the crate and started working very slowly using the concepts to expand the den. So far, so good, I am up to 3 rooms after two months, which is half of my first floor. There was one accident near the two month mark, which occurred in a room in a spot which I determined she remembered from the earlier days of accidents. This book had a section to address that as well. I immediately gated it off as the accident room. Now the success continues and I recently left them for 6 hours as I enter the third month (after taking them for a long walk ensuring I new the status of elimination).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseExcellent book, but the house breaking chart is impossible to read in the Kindle version, no matter how big I make the font. How can I get a copy of this chart without buying the book in hard copy, now that I have purchased the Kindle version?
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2008Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLora Verni, a certified dog trainer with many years of experience, gives us the advantage of her expertise with this simple, yet highly effective book on house training puppies (and adult dogs who aren't 100% trained).
She guarantees that if you follow her steps, that you will have a house trained dog within one month--I found the book so effective that my dog was trained within 3 weeks!
This book, in simple and easy-to-read chapters, tells you exactly what to do to get your dog to "perform" on command, how to praise him when he's right, and how and when to correct him if he needs it.
In some chapters, she tells the reader that if they've understood the just-presented information, that they need to go back and read it again. She urges the whole family to be in on the house training routine--not just one "in-charge" family member.
She emphasizes crate training and why this is extremely important in training dogs not to "go" anywhere but their appropriate and special "spot".
All in all, if you haven't raised a dog in a while and are feeling the need for some pointers, this book will give you those and then some. In the conversational tone in which it's written, you will feel as if you're being given tips by a friend.
I would recommend it for anyone bringing home a new puppy, or an older dog who is "not sure" about it all.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2010Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book is an absolute necessity for any new dog owner. I have two Italian greyhounds, each adopted from rescue several months apart (one at 9 months old and one just over a year old); neither of them were housebroken. Italian greyhounds (like many small breed dogs) are known for being extremely difficult to housebreak - it is the second most common reason they are surrendered to rescue (the first being leg breaks). While researching the breed and reading up on various forums, many Italian greyhound owners state that this breed can never truly be housebroken and will always be prone to occasional accidents, and that it's just something you have to live with when you have these dogs. After reading this book and following the methods, both of my dogs were completely housebroken in just under one month. During that month I had to be very diligent, but the work paid off - it has been several years since and both dogs are still completely reliable. We even moved to a new residence (the book addresses the fact that dogs can regress in their training for a variety of reasons, one of them being moving to a new home) and never had any problems. This is truly an amazing book that I recommend to anyone getting or thinking of getting a dog.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSimple and logical, it's nice to see someone that broke down the steps even for adult dogs and explained why it is essential to follow them. I just finish reading it so I haven't had a chance to test it on my 2 little dogs 3 yrs old. I hope I can be consistent and persistent for the whole month and see the results
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt's in the details. I've had dogs since I was a child. Of course, I didn't do the housebreaking, but I don't recall any major issues. Then I grew up and got my own puppy in my early 20s. I'm now in my 60s and I've only been without a dog for a few years twice. So, I've house trained my fair share of puppies. And, I've had lots of different breeds: Labrador, Airedale, Welsh terrier, standard poodle, miniature schnauzer, standard schnauzer, and a couple of mutts. My husband and I got an adorable little Norwich terrier in April 2015. He's now 11 months old and still giving us fits. Honestly, I've never been so frustrated in trying to house train any puppy!
In desperation I bought this book about a week ago, and I'm already seeing great results. I'm tracking everything, and actually giving him a lot more freedom. Strangely enough, those two things are really helpful. I know some people feel like there's nothing new here, and I'll agree that a lot of the basic information has been covered before. However, it's those few extra things you might not consider that make a big difference.
I bought the Kindle version so I could have it NOW! It was worth every penny!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Crate training
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseBrilliant book. I decided to read this before buying a puppy. It is brilliant for quick house training. I work from home and so am with the dog all day but I have followed this book and am very pleased with the results after only 4 weeks. I would recommend this book to all people thinking about getting a dog. I read it before I actually got the puppy but have also referred to it since.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book and fun to read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book is full of great tips and not just for house breaking. It is also fun and easy to read. However, I would suggest that the author revise what she has written about dominance and pack behavior. Her thinking on these subjects seems a bit outdated. But still a great dog training book
