- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2013In this exceptional story, Megan Rix takes readers on her journey of becoming a puppy parent for a Helper Dogs organization. I was simply amazed to read about the things these service dogs are trained to do for the disabled! Dogs can do laundry? Really?! And that's just one of the amazing things these dogs can do. While I was reading this book, I had taken a break to do some shopping and actually saw a helper dog in the department store. My mind was immediately on this story. I now have such an appreciation for these dogs and the talents of their trainers and puppy parents.
I don't know how the puppy parents do it though. Through Megan Rix's eyes I saw how attached she became to her trainer puppies. Who wouldn't be? My heart broke for her after the couple months were up and the puppy she had spoiled with love had to move on to the next phase of their training. Megan went through the process twice - raising two successful puppies in training which is a feat because service dogs must be nearly perfect. This was especially impressive because she had never owned a dog before. As much as she wanted to keep these dogs as her own, I know it was rewarding for her to hear about the difference they were making in the life of a person with a disability. Service dogs are often the reason these people wake up in the morning. It's very sweet.
Another side of this story was the struggle Megan and her husband, Ian, had with trying to have a baby. It warmed my heart that a dog could become so special in her life that it helped ease her pain with infertility issues. I adored reading about how much these animals were loved. You will too!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA couple who are trying for a baby - but get a puppy instead. They train the puppy and are committed to giving it up for further training so that it can eventually go to a person who is physically disabled and needs the services of a special dog to help in their everyday life. This couple is selfish and they don't want to give up their trained pup for the benefit of a handicapped person. They do eventually - but this only highlights their insensitivity and egotistical characters. Eventually they get a puppy for themselves - all's well that ends well. End of a boring story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
My daughter saw this book in a shop and knew it was a book that I would love, and she was so right..
It is a true life story of Megan and Ian who tried everyway possible to have a child. My heart went out to them both.
Whilst Megan was going through having tests, she became a puppy parent whereby the dog would later go on to be a helper for the disabled.
Emma was the first puppy that Megan was given and she cared for Emma until the pup was 6 months old and then with a broken heart Meg had to give up the puppy for the next stage of her training. She knew when she went in for being a puppy parent that she would have to give up the pup but she didn't realise how attached to her she and Ian would become..
Megan was still having tests when a second pup arrived, his name was Freddy and she loved him just as much as Emma.
After Freddy became 6 months he too also had to go on to his next stage of training, Both Megan and Ian decided that it was too painful to love these tiny babies and then give them up, so they decided to have a golden retriever puppy of their own.
Sadly Emma and Ian decided that they could not carry on with IVF and other treatment so they both decided enough was enough.
I wont go any further into the story as I would not want to spoil it for anyone buying the book.
I thought the book was beautiful, the words came straight from Megan's heart. There was plenty of laughter and tears along the way, and some extremely proud, inforgetable moments. It is a book I am so glad to have,a book to treasure.
Just one footnote for Ian if he reads this, when you were asked to name a puppy (all will be revealed in the book) and the alphabetical letter was M why did you say Minnie????? Wouldn't Megan have been more appropriate? It would be wonderful for Megan to have the puppy named after her.she went though so much.
God bless you both and hugs for Traffy!!

3.0 out of 5 stars I liked the concept and during the read
I'm very ambivalent about this book. When I bought it, I liked the concept and during the read, I appreciated getting to know more about raising and training puppies for service but the author's own story and her attitude about many of the issues left me confused and feeling that this was more a self-help book for her than a good story for the readers. I wouldn't say not to read it but it won't go on my recommended list.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is so easy to fall in love with the puppy and not ...
A lovely tender book setting out the difficulties of rearing a puppy ready for training to become a helper dog for a disabled person, and for pointing our the heartbreak it causes when it is time hand over the pup for advanced training. It is so easy to fall in love with the puppy and not easy to let go even when you know right from the start that the pup is going to fulfil someone else's heart with joy and enable that person to lead a fuller life.
