Product Description

We believe you will agree that the Gun Dog House Door products are the “finest-looking,” best “designed,” and greatest “value” for the money you have ever seen in a pet door. Gun Dog House Door gives you the confidence to say, "At Last Better Dog Doors."
Installation Wall and Door Entry
Step 1 Measurement
The installation height of the ground is more critical to a dog using the door than the size of the opening. We recommend the opening start 2 - 2.5" below your dogs chest. Take your measurement from ground to the bottom of your dogs chest, then subtract 2.5". This will be the bottom of your opening.
Step 2 Cutting Your Opening
Create the rough opening in your mounting surface per your specific door. Small Heavy Duty Dog Door and Small Easy Dog Door (9 5/8" x 14 1/2"). Heavy Duty Dog Door and Easy Dog Door (13 1/4" x 18 1/4"). Big Dog Door and Easy Big Dog Door (18 1/4" x 26 1/4").
Step 3 PVC Trim
We recommend using caulking or silicone on the PVC kit to seal between the kit and mounting surface. The PVC Kit consists of 2 pieces. The narrower piece is installed to the outside of your application. The door will be fastened to this piece. The larger piece is installed on the interior. Your drop down closure will be attached to this piece. Two screws per channel fasten it to the PVC kit, place 1 screw underneath each channel to act as a stop.
Step 4 Door and Drop Down Install
Installing the dog door, place the dog door over the narrower piece of the PVC kit so the entire opening is covered. Use the included screws to fasten the door to the PVC kit. Installing the Drop Down Closure, use the 4 screws to connect the metal channels to the PVC kit. Once installed, the panel slides down into the channel to prevent use of the door.

Show your dog how to use door. Your dog will learn to use your pet door almost at once, but there are a few which may be a little nervous at first. The most important rule is to be patient. Do not let the dog have a bad experience or it may become frightened.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025Size: Medium 20lbs-120lbsColor: Heavy Duty DoorVerified PurchaseWe have paid a lot more money for dog doors before that break. This one is going strong and we have had no problems. My husky never walks out or in. She always goes through it at top speed. It is a little heavy, but even my cat has figured out how to use it. It seals great unless the wind is blowing hard right at it, then it will blow open a little and we have to block it off.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2008I used to buy the pet doors locally and all they carried were the flexible plastic ones. These would work fine, but all of them cracked and fell apart when we'd get our annual northern states week in January where the temperature drops below -30F. Like putting a rubber band in liquid nitrogen. The last straw was adopting a new puppy who managed to destroy 2 more doors with chewing.
This door is very rugged and chew-proof. Easy to install. We've yet to go through a winter with it, but metal and plexiglass should easily survive the cold. It is loud, as I've seen in other reviews, but we have a kennel attached to the barn, so noise is not an issue. If we did have a kennel attached to the house, my guess is some foam insulation would quiet it down just fine.
So far, so good.....
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2021Size: Medium 20lbs-120lbsColor: Heavy Duty DoorVerified PurchaseI do not usual write reviews on products but this dog door is the worst ever. I bought this door because we got a puppy and he has eaten 3 plastic dog door flaps. We also have cats that use the door so I ordered the easy door and looking at the picture it looks like it has a magnet on the bottom to seal the door shut. When it arrived there is no magnet and it has a gap all the way around the flap. This is going into a door in our bedroom so this was not going to work at all. I got in contact with Lance at Gun Dog House Door and switched it out for the heavy duty door; he said a 3 pound Chihuahua can open this door. The comments I was reading said it was really heavy and very loud when it closed. BELIEVE THE COMMENTS. It scares the puppy so bad he will not even come into the bedroom. There is no way we can sleep at night and have the dogs use the door. VERY LOUD! It also says it is weather tight do not believe this either! We are very disappointed in this product! If you are going to use it for a kennel or dog house it would work but if you are going to use it in your house SAVE YOUR MONEY. Last thing when they refunded my money they held out 19.20 for a restocking fee which was not mentioned at all when I was talking to Lance about exchanging doors. If I had to do over again I would not purchase this product!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2016Size: Medium 20lbs-120lbsColor: Heavy Duty DoorVerified PurchaseWe purchased this after our two young German Shorthaired Pointers had eaten 3 other doggy doors/flaps. We visited a friends house who bragged how well their Gun Dog Door held up. I will agree it is very heavy duty and the dogs have not even attempted to destroy it. My only complaint and the only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because it does not seal up as well as some of the other doggy doors do so there is a little bit of a draft around it and in windy WY there are quite a few days we just shut it so we are not heating the outdoors. We did attempt to remedy that with some weather stripping but every time we put that up the dogs tear it down, so we just choose to shut the door on really windy cold days. Great product and am glad someone told me about it!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2012I bought this door because my big ol' boxer is a sis and he will not play outside. I have a door that had previously been fitted with a plastic pet door, like those available in pet stores. Mr. Wimp chewed and punched until he totally destroyed it. So began my search for an indestructable door for when I need him to be outside.
Other reviewers complain about the noise this door makes, and they are correct: it is loud. It also has some pretty stout springs that may be difficult to navigate if your dog is slow, old, timid, or puny. My dog was frightened out of his wits the first couple of times I coaxed him through and is still pretty careful with it on day two.
My beef with this door is that I could not tell by the pictures what I was actually getting. The seller was very friendly on the phone, but they did not know what it looked like either, as they don't stock the door so they never get to see it. That deficiency is what prompted me to write a review. What follows is what I wish I had known up front.
See the shiny aluminum framework in the seller's picture? (The clear area in the middle is a heavy plexiglass panel that swings the other way.)When you buy this door, you are ONLY getting a flap to screw on over the hole you cut in your door or wall or whatever. That's it. No trim of any kind for the hole. This is fine if you are using it for a gun dog kennel, but on the house where looks matter, plan to spend extra time and money trimming out your opening. The instructions that accompanied this were by no means exhaustive, so don't buy this if you aren't pretty sure you can handle what you're getting yourself into.
This door will NOT be weatherproof. There is a gap above the plexiglass flap that is substantial enough to let in quite a draft and maybe water, depending on where you put the door. I put mine on an exterior mudroom door protected by a covered patio, so it doesn't matter for me, but other buyers might want to know that!
The door itself is very heavily constructed, but only 2 little wood screws actually attach the flap to your door. I drilled holes all the way through the door and used nuts and bolts to make the attachment instead. (You will have to make allowances for counter sinking the heads if you buy the closing panel.)
All in all, this door is super sturdy and it will serve the purpose for which I purchased it for years to come. If you take the time to dress it up when you install it, it won't look too bad, either. Not attractive, just not too bad.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2019Size: Medium 20lbs-120lbsColor: Heavy Duty DoorVerified PurchaseOk so this door is metal and very stout. It is 1/4 metal. The clear door opens in one direction and then entire metal housing and clear door open the other direction. I installed my on the outside of the house and trimmed up the inside. It is 10 degrees at night here and now my laundry room stays warm. I have not even added any weather stripping. I work nights and the noise hasn’t bothered me at all.
Pros-
two screw installation
Very large
Very sturdy
Large heavy duty springs
Seals well without weatherstripping
Fits my large saint bernard
Cons
Loud if you have it in you house and not in a laundry room
Overall save yourself some money buying this instead of the plastic dog doors that fall apart.
