About this item
- EFFICIENT LOAD CARRYING: The Approach Pack features a weight-forward saddlebag design that provides your dog with a comfortable method to carry the essentials for your trip. The pack's convenient, easy-access stash pockets are perfect for often used items and the capacity is ideal for overnight adventures.
- COMFORTABLE AND DURABLE: The Approach's streamlined design and lightweight materials and components allow for comfortable fit and long-term durability. The padded, comfortable handle offers an optimal balance point with good load dispersion for controlled and comfortable lifting (lift only as high as your dog can safely jump, as the buckles are not strength-rated for high-angle rope work).
- INTEGRATED HARNESS AND REFLECTIVE TRIM: The Approach's integrated harness features provide for leash walking (clip in via the V-ring), lifting (via the handle), and pulling (via the tow eye). The integrated, reflective trim allows you to keep an eye on your dog, even in low-light visibility environments.
- NON-SLIP STRAPS AND SHELTERED BUCKLES: The Approach's non-slip girth straps are easy to adjust, secure, and have pads to distribute load and increase comfort while lifting. The sheltered buckles stay in place for easy, one-handed clipping, and are protected from wear. 5 points of adjustment allow you to create a customizable fit specifically for your dog enabling a full range of motion.
- APPPROACH PACK SIZING: The Approach Pack is available in 5 sizes (see images for sizing chart): XX-Small: 13-17 inches (33-43 cm); X-Small: 17-22 inches (43-56 cm); Small: 22-27 inches (56-69 cm); Medium: 27-32 inches (69-81 cm); Large/X-Large: 32-42 inches (81-107 cm). Choose the right size based on your dog's girth. Girth can be determined by measuring around the widest part of the rib cage. For in between sizes, choose the smallest size.

The Ruffwear Approach Pack is an everyday pack with excellent performance, fit, and functionality. It provides dogs with the ability to efficiently carry a load, generating instant four-legged motivation to explore. The integrated harness, combined with the lightweight materials and a streamlined design, is comfortable and allows dogs to carry more trail necessities. Great for day hikes and overnight adventures. Select the correct size based on your dog's girth (measurement around the widest part of the rib cage). XX-Small: 13-17 inches (33-43 cm); X-Small: 17-22 inches (43-56 cm); Small: 22-27 inches (56-69 cm); Medium: 27-32 inches (69-81 cm); Large/X-Large: 32-42 inches (81-107 cm). - Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2013I had read reviews on the upgrade from this one where you could remove the pack. I thought that would be handy, but didn't want to shell out the difference. So I took a chance on this one due to other reviews.
Glad I did. Stitching is solid. Material is solid. I like the handle. It does ride forward over the shoulders. The pack size itself is large, but can fit a 1L water bladder easily and that is what I use for weight. It has the big pockets, and then one smaller pocket above it to put treats, keys, whatever in.
Someone else mentioned in a review about a male dog perhaps urinating on the straps. Like that review, I didn't see a problem of misplaced stream on it, which I have had problems with on the cheaper pack I got from Petsmart.
The straps fit great. They didn't seem to rub him. He ran around quite happily with it. It is a little hard to put on a full pack if your dog wiggles, but mine sits very nicely while I take the time to strap it on. I like the breast Y-shaped strap; the cheaper one I had previously bought did not use it, and with the Ruffwear Approach I really felt like the pack was secure on my dog. I wasn't worried about it slipping and sliding or putting pressure on his neck. We went on a 6-mile hike and it remained in place the entire time.
I like the color. Bright enough to be noticed.
In all, very pleased. Not sure about how heat will be with this--we didn't go on a hot summer day yet! There is no mesh material to help with that (probably because mesh won't hold up to heavy use?). I hope to update this review in the future once we have tried a hot humid day in Texas, rather than a cool spring day in Montana.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2014Bought this for our dog, because I only buy the best stuff and if it turns out to not be the best, I promptly return it. Love this brand. The ring that the leash clips to could have been heavier material like aluminum or steel or something more substantial, I'm not sure what it's made of as it feels like plastic, but aside from that, the build quality is fantastic. Would buy again and would also buy any of their other clearance items from their website, because you can find some bargains there. Oh, and the dog doesn't like it very much, because she's a big fat fatty pants and she doesn't like having things strapped to her back, but too bad for her. Once she slims down she'll be used to wearing it and I'm sure it won't bother her, I'm sure. However, as a side note, when she has the pack on and we take her for walks, she is the MOST OBEDIENT dog that she's ever been. She doesn't walk in front of us and pull us all over the place, she obeys all of her commands like 'sit' and 'wait'. Couldn't ask for more...well, maybe a sturdier ring to hook the leash to, but that's neither here nor there.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2017For how well rated this bag comes I had really high expectations, so forgive me if I sound picky but I find that the bag slips around on the dog too much, even though it is the proper size for him. Other than this the dog really enjoys it and we like that he can carry his own weight. It slips around less if there are good balanced weighted items in each bags (as opposed to a treat pouch and poop bag - which is all we need sometimes on our hikes).
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2015Good all around pack. Big side bags. Harness rides forward some times off the leash. If the load gets off balaced in any way the pack wants tho shift to heavy side and cause problems. Dog seems to not mind the pack.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2017This is my second one -- my senior dog used his for years. It never wore out and became a hand me down to a new puppy. When we got a second puppy, he got this new one. A few minor differences between the old version and the new but both stay put really well, and help slow our young ones down on walks. I think it gives them more "body awareness." As soon as it cools down in Texas, they will be going hiking...for now they are just getting used to it and to carrying light loads (one water bottle on each side). The best fit, design, quality and customer service (if you have any questions, just ask them.) Only negative-- I wish they had more colors to chose from. I'd pay a fortune for an olive green army looking one. Are you listening, Ruffwear??? :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2014After comparing several dogpacks and reading many reviews, I decided on the Approach. My doberman measures 32 1/2 and the medium fits her well, while the chest strap is fully extended. The pack seems to be made of quality material, the straps stayed put once adjusted on our 5 1/2 mile walk. My dog has never worn one before, but took to it immediately. I had tried it on her the night before our walk and then when she saw me get it out the next morning, she became very excited and anxious to get going! Because it was our first use, I just packed two .5 liter collapsible Platypus water bottles, a roll of Earth rated poop bags, a collapsible water dish, and two soaked wash clothes in zip lock baggies (for cooling her off, it was warm). There was room to spare in the saddlebags. So glad I decided on the Approach, the color and size are perfect for my Dobe and I expect it'll be a must have for many adventures! :)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2015Bought this for my year old German Shepherd puppy's first backpacking trip. She carried three days of dry food in ziplock baggies. The pack is not waterproof, but the food stayed dry in the baggies when she waded in the first lake we came to on the trail. I bought a large and the fit is perfect. I like the harness in front on the chest, and the two lightly padded straps across the belly. I thought it would be awkward having my pup step through the front part, but she doesn't mind at all and it's easy on and off. The pack stays snug and she had not problem sitting, laying, jumping and swimming. The bright orange collar is easy to see from a distance. We received lots of compliments on the pack and color. I have two other packs from different companies and this will be my "go to" dog pack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Je recommande !
Un excellent sac, les matériaux sont de qualité, et mon chien l'a bien accepté, moyennant phase d'adaptation à vide... Lors des pauses je lui retirais le sac, ça prend 5 secondes

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
Exceptionally well made piece of kit. The design places the load over the dogs withers instead of the weaker part of the back. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Awesome. My dog has carried all sorts of heavy stuff during our outdoor adventures. It stays on well, if balanced properly. After a couple of years one of the zippers pulled out of the track ... perhaps I can fix it but this pack will be relegated to local use. I already bought another one as a replacement for backcountry trips. The only downside is that it doesn't hold many bulky items, I typically load up my dog with full nalgenes, water bottles, fuel, and other dense heavy stuff that is ok to submerge when the dog inevitably goes into a creek or lake. Otherwise, the dog would be carrying much less than what she is capable of (thus, I would have to carry more). My replacement is one size bigger so I will be able to fit bulkier stuff inside.
