Choosing the right size dog pack

image

Take your dog's girth measurement

Before ordering, take note of your dog's girth size by measuring the widest part of your dog's ribcage. Since dogs come in various sizes and body shapes, make sure to take any other unique traits (large shoulders, long torso, etc.) into consideration. If your dog is between sizes, it is recommended to size up.

image

Putting on your dog's hiking pack

Slip the pack over your dog's head. Put your dog's right leg through the right front loop, then thread the center strap under your dog's belly and secure with the buckle.

image

Getting a secure fit

Adjust all straps to fit your dog's body. The straps should fit snugly, but not so snug that you can't put two fingers underneath the straps comfortably. Before venturing out, it's important to make sure the weight is evenly distributed on both sides of the pack to keep it from sliding to one side.

Safety hazard, but otherwise okay, should be improved.

Safety hazard, but otherwise okay, should be improved.
For 30-ish dollars, I would have expected more. I will start off by offering my biggest issue: The D ring is NOT WELDED. We are not told it's not welded, and you can barely spin it around to check (which as a dog collar/harness maker, I ALWAYS suggest you check), and are told to hook a leash to it by the company. My dog isn't big on pulling, but managed to bend it about 1/4th of an inch apart- in about 30 seconds of pulling. You have a dog who genuinely pulls or lunges then this d-ring is going to pry apart instantly. This is a major flaw and a safety hazard. The straps are hard to use- they could have just used a typical triglide, but instead made an obnoxious to use Velcro bit that irritates my dogs skin. The handle is nice- it's firm, easy to grab, padded, good over-all design. This is important, because you'll be grabbing it a lot to re-adjust the backpack, unless you use perfectly balanced items- like cans of soup. But add a poop bag to one side, and it will be touching the ground in no-time, flopped over. If you tighten the straps enough to keep them from slipping, it will cause your dog a lot of pain due to the rubbing after awhile, which can be bad enough to warrant a vet visit if you aren't careful. The stitching started coming undone the first use. I bought this February of 2019. Medium. It fits both my shepherd and my mix. The second strap is very useful- but if you have a male, be careful. It takes the perfect amount of adjusting to keep it from rubbing their armpits, or their personal bits. For simple exercising, its good. I wouldn't use it for a day hike, more of an hour or two for a jaunt through the neighborhood or a well-cleared trail where there won't be any branches or brush. The cute little 'side' pockets are pretty useless. If you want to put your keys in there it'd work, or a wallet, but if you do it sets the whole bag off balance, and if you have it tight enough not to set it off balance, it messes with your dogs skin. I will say though that the larger pockets are very good in design. They expand, or contract. Zipping the bottom close helps it stay close to your pups side, and limits jostling. If you need more things in there, unzipping them gives you a LOT more space. Another note on the second strap is that it does go in an odd angle. It's hard to explain, but makes fitting it properly very hard on my male, but not my female. My male is the one who most often wears it, as he's a service dog and is with me virtually 24/7 to do medical alerts/responses. Over all I wouldn't get this again, or recommend it to most people. I'm sure others may find it great, especially if their dog has longer fur or denser fur where it wont irritate their skin as much. I think for over 30 dollars, you should get a better quality backpack. For 30 dollars you should get a welded d-ring that won't be a safety hazard.

Ours was different than what was shown, which explains some of the questions and reviews. I expected a pack similar to what we had borrowed--a one piece pack that slipped over the dog. What we got (as others have mentioned) was in TWO pieces. There's the bottom part that has two slim, mesh pockets on the side, and then the "handle" on top. Then you slip over the "saddlebag" portion which hash an opening in the middle, so it goes over the protruding "handle". This actually attaches to the bottom piece with a plastic closer. I contacted Outward Bound with questions and they said it's their Quick Release version. So actually, it's two harnesses in one, once you clip it in place. You could use the under layer by itself, but we use both. Now that I know, looking carefully at the photo, I can see it doesn't match ours.

Our trainer recommended it for our 18 month old 82 pound hound/lab mix as he's got LOTS of energy. She had the older version (which was the style we expected) and put water bottles on each side to make him work a bit harder. It does a good job at that. He does heel better with it on. I also put his empty poop bags in it. Once the bags are "used" I carry them, as it would make the pack unbalanced. I've had no problems with it shifting at all, even when he shakes. As far as size, we got the large. Our guy is BIG and at first we thought it was too small, but we re-adjusted the straps and it fits fine. The packaging said there was also an XL, but I haven't seen it for sale anywhere, and he doesn't need it. (Some people think he's a Great Dane mix, nope) To get it off, we release the two side/bottom clips, then pull it over his head, as one piece. It's a little bit of a hassle and it may be easier to loosen the front straps, but it would be a hassle. To put it on, we slip it over his had and back and put his right foot thru, then strap him in.. We've had it about 2 weeks, and follow the advice of leaving the side zipper pockets with the bottles open slightly, to decrease the pulling on the zipper. However, there doesn't seem to be an issue.

It's made much better than the picture or description shows. The top/under section of mesh, actually is quite soft, It's not really padded, but neither is it just rough mesh. He hasn't shown any discomfort from the straps or the mesh. We only use two bottles, one on each size, as our trainer tried four and it was just too heavy for him. We're not trying to weigh him down, just add a little more to his work out.

I ordered a medium for my golden doodle (more golden than doodle) because a lot of people were saying it ran large. I couldn’t get the abdomen strap around her and unfortunately you have to take all the packaging off to try it on so it’s probably too late to return it. It does fit her sister who is more poodle but she will not leash at all. Over all it looks awesome. It expands at the bottom if you need to pack more. I would recommend just really make sure you get the right size.

Edited To Add: Kygen is just OutwardHound now and they have a new site address. I thought I should update my review since I did state you should go to the Kyjen site. Now to make sure you are getting the proper sizing before you order here just go to http://outwardhound.com/
site and go to GEAR then hit backpacks. :o)
I had to return this pack becuase the measurements were wrong. My suggestion to you is to please, go to Kyjen's website and look at the measurements for this particular pack. They make more than one pack and I've noticed people listing measurements for the wrong pack. That's what happened to me and becuase of it I had to return it.

However I was able to purchase the right size somewhere else and felt I could come back and let you know how things are going so far.
    .
Do note, this pack is smaller than their other packl.
It's lightweight which helps in the heat.
She is able to hold her two bowls (which fold flat, see my review for them if interested) some food and some other small items like eye wipes, clips etc. I carry the water but if it was placed in a flat, or small round bottle this pack fits it just fine.

She loves it, and this is a dog that does not like to be harnessed. She puts up with it but doesn't jump for joy when she is in her regular walking harness.

So far it's held up fine. My dog is an Aussie and likes having jobs. She does search, herding, she hikes, swims and we even allow her to go into our house first when we get home as she likes to do a full check before we come in. A lot of the time she is wearing a pack (except for herding)
It's nice to have her things all together as well with out using one of the larger packs. The handle on the top turns it into a carrying case for her items when she's not wearing it and it's light enough to just pack into my bag as well.

It looks really nice too. I will update this review with a photo soon.

I loved this backpack and so did my dog… Until it fell apart. It’s such a pretty color and so cute on him and seems pretty comfortable, but only had 10 days when it started to fray and the seams started to come apart. By the three-week mark you can see the huge tear completely in one pocket. unusable with items falling out. This was one walk a day, not even real hiking. I was just using it to wave him down I was just using it to wave him down. He’s carrying pretty ordinary stuff that a dog pack should be durable enough to handle. Food and water, pretty heavy but isn’t that the idea? i’m getting a replacement so I’ll try again on the off chance this was a dud, but if this one doesn’t last I will send it back for a full refund.

UPDATE: got replacement, second one developed same tears and holes and worn spots within a week. Just carried simple water and food. Going back for refund. Really too bad.

Update number two: i’m now on my fourth pack because this is the one my fosters Rescue insists on buying him even though they don’t last. I just added photos of packed number four and how completely it ripped. Buy this pack if you just want to keep adding to a landfill. Absolutely ridiculous that they can’t make this more adorable. What a waste

I got this so I could take my pup on longer trips and get him to carry some extra water for himself. Easy to get on, and he was very comfortable and happy in it immediately. The only issue is that you need to try and keep the loads of either side of the pack pretty evenly balanced, otherwise it starts to tilt. Sometimes Oz would do a big shake to rebalance it, but sometimes I'd stop to reposition it for him.

I'd imagine this would be especially good for people with younger, more energetic dogs who are harder to tire out, as it definitely tires Oz out. Because of that (he's about 6 years old, and has arthritis though it hasn't curbed his enthusiasm for hikes), I didn't end up using it for longer hikes as it did leave him pooped sooner than usual, but have used it on our usual ones it has been great for that. He get loads of compliments on it when we run into people heading up our usual mountain.

Oz is probably a hound/maybe some shepherd mix, wearing a medium

Lieferung aus den USA dauerte 14 Tage, also i.O.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-adjust, lightweight, and wonderfully manufactured!

Great product! Huge improvement from my husky's last backpack in terms of comfort and fitting. It is lightweight and he doesn't mind wearing outside of walk time too. Easy to adjust sizing but may take a little time to acclimatise dogs not used to backpacks (requires them to fit leg and head through loops).

Here he is carrying 1kg of baked beans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the bad reviews, this day pack is fabulous when used for it's intended purpose!

Now that we've used the pack, I'm really confused about some of the negative reviews here, so wanted to add my two cents, since the negative reviews almost stopped me from buying this. This is a fabulous day pack (we live downtown in a big city and it's perfect for our day trips and adventures, walking 1-3 hours on a normal terrain). It's a day pack, it's not advertised for use as a hunting or forest hiking pack, so I'm not sure why so many reviewers bought it for that purpose and then left bad reviews - there are more expensive and sturdy packs for those purposes. This pack does run a bit large - my boy is 37lbs and has a 24" chest, so according to the sizing charts a medium should fit him perfectly, however we had to tighten the medium a LOT and now the excess straps have to be wrapped and tucked in so they don't hang around his underbelly and trip him - I think a small would have fit him a lot better. It doesn't slide to the side as long as the weight in the pack is even on both sides, and it's VERY easy to put on and remove. I wasn't confused about the straps at all, like other reviewers were...it has the exact same type of adjustable straps as a human backpack has, and once the initial size adjustments are done, there are buckles on every strap to easily snap this on and unbuckle to remove it quickly and effortlessly. A lot of reviewers were critical about the pack sliding when their dog plays in it - we use this for walking distances in the city, and I remove it when we arrive at our destination, so my dog doesn't wear it when he's playing. The only negative feedback I have is that the straps can feel a bit rough rubbing against my dog's underbelly, so it would be nice if Outward Hound would consider adding a soft cover to protect the belly (like a seatbelt cover type material). However, this is an easy fix, if I sew on a piece of felt or cotton myself. A lot of people have complained about the D-ring coming off. I walk my dog with a collar/leash so cannot comment on the D-ring, since we'll never be using it. The materials are good quality and the straps are sturdy, and stay in place once they've been properly adjusted. Anyway, this is a fabulous purchase, if you buy it for the intended purpose. My dog seems comfortable wearing it, and the pockets are substantial enough to carry quite a few supplies, dishes, water, snacks, poop bags etc. It's everything I hoped it would be, and is fabulous for day trips around the city. I'm so pleased!
