About this item

  • BUILT TO LAST: The K-9 Float Coat is constructed from time-proven, abrasion-resistant materials to instill confidence that the jacket will be able to keep your dog safe in the water for years to come. The easy-to-clip sheltered buckles keep straps firmly in place while your dog is active.
  • STRATEGICALLY-PLACED CLOSED-CELL FOAM PANELS: Strategically-placed closed cell foam panels enable your dog to maintain their natural swimming position without them feeling restricted by the life jacket.
  • STRONG, LOW-PROFILE HANDLE: The K-9 Float Coat features a strong, low-profile handle that is optimally positioned on the top of the life jacket towards the front of your dog's back so that you can easily help them out of the water.
  • ADJUSTABLE NECK CLOSURE AND REFLECTIVE TRIM: The telescoping neck closure on the K-9 Float Coat is permanently attached and secure while still being adjustable to a wide range of dog sizes. The reflective trim helps you keep an eye on your dog, even in low-light visibility environments, and includes a light loop for attaching The Beacon light (not included) for additional visibility.

A high quality PFD for your dog
5 out of 5 stars
A high quality PFD for your dog
I looked for a long time for a PFD that would fit my 10 pound Papillion well while being comfortable and also allow for unrestricted movement. I looked locally at places like Bass Pro Shops and found many inexpensive PFDs for dogs, but all that I was able to find were very bulky and did not allow natural movement by the dog. This PFD by Ruffwear is without a doubt the best I have found. After proper fitting and adjustment, my dog is able to run and move perfectly while it is on him. The only downside to this PFD is cost. The cost of this jacket for my 10 pound dog was twice what I paid for my own life jacket, however it is constructed so much better and fits so much better than anything else I was able to find for a dog, I was happy to pay it. Just like other items I have purchased from Ruffwear, the construction is well done and heavy. This is a high quality PFD specifically designed for a dog.

This a great canine flotation device. Like so many of Ruffwear's products, it is well-designed and well-thought out. I use this on a 75 pound, muscular Labrador retriever.

I was concerned that my guy wouldn't like it because he is such a natural swimmer on his own. But the large fits him well and is adjustable for both his deep chest and narrower waist. He doesn't mind wearing it all.

I love the flotation around the neck and under his head, which works well to keep his head afloat should he lose the ability to do this himself. I have seen this feature in action on occasions when his slips backwards off my paddle board (that's another story). Anyway, it floats him upright in a very safe position. He is also easily able to turn himself into a prone position for easy, and fast prone position swimming, so it serves both the life-saving and recreational purposes well.

The handle on the coat is study and well-placed. I use it regularly to help lift my dog back onto the paddle board after his various dips, dives and swims.

The jacket also also a small plastic loop for attaching a leash. I wouldn't rely on this for a really strong puller for any length of time, but it has sufficed so far for my guy who tends to be very intent on getting to the water as quickly as possible, if you catch my drift.

Finally, it has a loop for attaching a beacon, a must-have when out after dusk, in the event of an emergency or for just increasing visibility in higher-traffic situations.

In terms of the price: the float coat costs what it costs. I consider my dog's life and safety to be worth every penny.

This item purchased for Bulldozer, our 14 month old, 55lb male English bulldog. I was initially impressed by the thickness of the product, clean stitching, durable construction, and the obvious thought into the placement of reflectors and handles. The sizing chart was quite accurate to ensure I purchased the proper size. The buckles are easy to adjust to the right fit; the tail keepers prevent the extra length of the straps from accidently getting caught in something or distracting Bulldozer when he swims. When we used the sturdy handle to pull him out of the pool, our dog is still balanced in the jacket so he doesn't get scared or spoofed.
When swimming, Bulldozer will turn quickly or try to jump up on the wall to the negative edge of pool. When he gets off balance, the jacket helps return him to the best position. The thick collar helps him keep his head up. However, he is still able to purposely place his head about 6" under water to grab toys(or the Kreepy Krauly hose). We used this jacket for 3 weeks, almost everyday. At times, Bulldozer swims for over 3 hours with no problems. The jacket withstood the occasional biting from the dog when I try to put it on him; chlorine, and south Texas heat when I lay it out to dry. It dries out quickly.
Although this jacket is pricey, we are extremely pleased with this purchase. It is worth the extra dollars for quality and peace of mind for the safety of our pet.

It was size specific. Make sure you measure your pet correctly and you should not have any issues. After having read several of the other reviews I was initially quite concerned about my purchase. I measured my dog carefully and made my order based strictly by the size I had measured. My dog was very close to the overlap from one size to the next so I stuck very literally with her measurements and did not allow for any wiggle room or allowances. It was the right decision and it fits my lab/russell mix perfectly, and most importantly she seems to enjoy it.

I have a shiloh who absolutely refuses to be left behind. So, I had to find a way to make her more comfortable on long swims behind my stand up paddle board. This jacket was perfect. It is thin enough that it isn't uncomfortable for her but provides enough flotation that she gets an amazing work out without becoming exhausted and panicking. Now that she's older she also jet skis with me, so it is nice to know that even though she can swim well, she has that extra flotation just in case. I would take her on 4-6 mile swims (we built up to that of course) at least 3 times a week and she would run through brush and trees once she was on the shore with it on and it still looks brand new. It even has held up to me using the handle to drag her up on my SUP board (she's 96 lbs) after she gets tired of swimming to make the trip back to the car. I was also pleased that she easily raced around on land and it was stream-lined and light enough that she didn't seem to notice she was wearing it! I would definitely recommend, no complaints.

I decided to purchase this after buying an Outward Hound dog float. The Outward Hound doesn't have floats that wrap around the underside of your dog and mine struggled to keep her head above the water. I watched several YouTube videos on the K9 Float Coat and one even mentions how the floatation that wraps around your dog's chest, helps keep them above water better. Well, yesterday, I tried this K9 Float Coat on my 4 year old female, Boxer and I was pretty disappointed that she still struggled to keep her head above the water in our pool. Her chin was in the water and she got nervous when water was splashing in her face as she paddled. So, I once again had to hold the handle so she could comfortably swim. I'm not sure if these floats aren't working because Boxers tend to be very muscular and heavy in the front, or what. So, now I've basically spent $112 on two floats that seem to just barely keep my dog above the water. I don't know why they don't make the floatation thicker!

5.0 out of 5 stars Diese Schwimmweste gibt uns die nötige Sicherheit!
Reviewed in Germany on January 2, 2014

    excellentes finitions.

We has a Crewsaver coat the first time believing that Crewsaver was a good brand. Unfortunately this came apart very quickly so we changed it for a Ruffwear one and i must say this is perfect - Would highly recommend. I have heard tales of cheaper jackets having the buoyancy in the wrong place and therefore not supporting the dogs head above the water! Even the pull out handle is really strong.
