- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2014As someone who loves dogs and owner of several, I had to smile as I read through Puppy Training Guide. I remember that each dog that I had the honor of having as part of my family, arrived while still a puppy. Every situation that author James Jackson goes over is one that I can relate to. I wish I had this book with our first puppy. As first time puppy owners we were thrilled, excited and nervous. We wanted to give the puppy a warm and loving home but honestly, did not know how to go about the loving and the training at the same time.
Puppy Training Guide takes you through all the stages of puppyhood - how to introduce your new furry family member to your home, how to potty train, the right equipment, develop good manners and how to behave in all sorts of social settings. What I found interesting was that even though we have had several dogs, Puppy Training Guide is very useful as it is well organized to move along with your puppy's growth, the right training at the right time.
I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of or has recently got a puppy, To have the best results, It is important to start training right away. I give this book a 5-star rating because it is an excellent step by step system that ensures a well behaved and happy puppy.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2014It is a short and good foundation puppy training guide. The first half of the book is very useful, giving you information on the importance of different voices for commands, encouragement/awarding, etc. But after the basics of sit, come, crate training, it isn't as helpful. It doesn't address issues like barking, jumping, leaving household cats alone, clicker training, etc. It is mostly helpful in getting you started. Another thing that bothered me is that it also tends to be unrealistic about how pets think. It put a lot of emphasis on your dogs feelings as if they are a person, I got a very anthropomorphic vibe from the author. I love my dog and I do think dogs have feelings, but I think it's a bit ridiculous to constantly talk about hurting your dogs feelings if you raise your voice too much, etc. Or how if you become angry at your puppy, they can sense it and their feelings will be very hurt b/c they are emotionally sensitive. Anyone who has watched any training videos, seen dog behavior correction shows, or read various training books know that that can be the heart of a lot of behavior problems. Because the owner puts too many human feelings to their pets. Animals have feelings but they aren't necessarily the same as us. <off soap box>. Overall, it's cheap and is a nice initial intro to training.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2015I learned a lot from this book and definitely recommend it. The book lists most of the commands a puppy should know, and generally clear instructions for teaching these commands.
In several cases, though, the instruction are unclear. For example, the explanation for teaching the command "settle" (as in settle down) is extremly unclear. I was unable to figure out exactly how the authors want to teach this. I was also able to find online better ways to teach several of the commands (like "come" or "here").
Also, some issues aren't mentioned at all. For example, the book says nothing about teaching a puppy to walk properly on a leash.
Despite this, I found the book to be extremely helpful. I am totally new to training dogs, and I would have had no idea at all how to get started if not for this book. Combined with google, the book is an invaluable resource.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2016I purchased the kindle edition of this based on the reviews. It was one of several puppy books that I purchased and was also the most disappointing. I know kindle editions sometimes have editing problems but honestly the writing style was more sixth grade term paper than professionally written how to book. Sometimes I just couldn't decide what the author's intent had been when writing a particular bit.
I liked the bullet point lists and the way topics were broken down, but I also kept getting the feeling that I'd somehow purchased a mechanical how to manual for repairing my new wind up toy rather than a guide on how to integrate a new _Living Creature_ into my life successfully.
This book does have some helpful information for first time puppy parents but I'd reccomend "The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the monks at New Skete or "How to Raise the Perfect Dog" by Cesar Millan any day before I'd even consider this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2016After reading the book I have to say this is an extremely poorly published book. There are misspelled words, poor grammar, the table of contents is all wrong and missing sections, and all the pages are pg. 187 throughout the entire book. Most of the material is pretty basic and provided some instruction, but no more than can be found on the internet for free. SAVE YOUR MONEY.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2014Puppies are my weakness. I am so in love with them because they are very cute! This book has taught me a lot especially when it comes to training my puppy be it obedience, crate, or potty kind of training. I find this book very helpful especially for dog lovers out there. It's better to train our pet well while they are still a puppy in order for them to be a well-behaved pet when they grow. Everything I needed was in The Fundamentals of Puppy Training from Chapter 1. Chapter 6, How to Show Love and Affection to Your Puppy is exactly what I needed. Now, my puppy is obedient to me. Kudos, author!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2016PROS: It's basic, but gave me some great ideas for the puppy training classes I led for kids at the farm summer camp i worked at. I ended up adopting one of the pups and used this book to help me with clicker training, proper commands, dominance, potty training and crate training. My puppy (8 months now) is an amazing dog. She is very obedient and social with people and other dogs. There are techniques in here that teach you how to create a submissive and friendly dog and the clicker and crate have worked like a charm for me and my dog :)
CONS: there are typos and incorrect grammar in this book which make it feel pretty unprofessional. the author repeats himself - a lot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally Something Different
I recommend this book. Provides solutions that aren't available elsewhere. I searched and continued to get the same advice until I found this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Guide
Nice but a little bit short in length.
Not bad though and gives some good insights. Would have liked to find something new but it was worth a read especially if you have never had a puppy before.
