5 out of 5 stars
Puppy loves the food, has reached an appropriate weight for his size and age, and his coat and ears are in great shape.
Our English Mastiff mix was badly undernourished when we rescued him; at around 13 weeks, he was under 15 pounds, his ribs showed very clearly, and his stomach was caved in - no puppy belly at all. We've had him a couple of weeks now, and he weighs 35 pounds. He's gaining about a pound a day, but he's not overweight at all; one can still feel ribs and he has a normal puppy belly. His coat is gorgeously healthy, he feels good and is active and alert, his ears are in great shape; he loves the food. We may switch him to salmon or other non-chicken, non-beef formula because I understand that chicken, beef, and grain allergies are common. I see no harm in avoiding the potential for skin, ear, or other issues by feeding salmon or lamb, etc. instead. Photo 1 was taken at the shelter. He looked much less nourished than the photo indicates when we rescued him. The video and photos 3 and 4 show him at 2+ weeks after rescue.

Trial and error -- that's our experience. My wife and I got a female soft coated wheaten terrier puppy from a breeder. The breeder had been using grain free Precise Naturals. Our puppy doesn't eat more than necessary, but, even so, it seemed to us that she did't care for her food. Using the internet, I researched alternative food as best as I could. My focus was on food that was made in America and contained no ingredients from China. I even sent emails to manufacturers to ask about those two issues. Blue Buffalo seemed to be a top quality food -- it was prevalent in stores, on the internet, and more expensive than other foods. However, the email reply I received turned me off -- instead of replying "yes" or "no", it sent me a lengthy "lawyer's letter" containing a lot of ifs, ands, and buts. My internet search also revealed that, in lawsuits against it, its defense is that it didn't make the food (a manufacturer it hired made the food). So, I decided against Blue Buffalo. Then I found Merrick, and liked that it is clear about being made in America and having no ingredients from China (not even additives).

We began with Merrick Classic. Our puppy liked it. However, we noticed that she developed an itchy butt and erratic bowels movements (all formed, but the timing was off). Then we switched to Merrick Grain Free. Our puppy liked it. However, we noticed that she became lethargic (unusual for a soft coated wheaten terrier puppy, not yet spayed), and she became disinterested in her food. Then we decided to mix Merrick Classic with Merick Grain Free (50/50). Time will tell how this mixture works out, but for now it seems just right. Our puppy once again is playful and spirited, and her bowel movements seem appropriate.

Our thoughts are that every puppy is different, just as every baby is different. I have healthy twin grandsons, yet their food preferences and allergies vary. Our puppy's vet seems to agree, even though she's not definitive about the issue, and she probably would be happy if we bought food she sells (not Merrick).

Probably what's true is that there are a lot of fine choices on the market. Just experiment, to find out what works best for your puppy. And, if you agree with me, don't put any food from China in your puppy's mouth. I don't dislike China, but I don't think there's any dispute about the fact that its food and health regulations fall short.

I have two Lab puppies and tried this by recommendation from our Vet office. The little guys eat it quickly and want more. (In puppy stage this is not a bad thing to give them what they need to grow on.) Premium dog food should have less “waste” to clean up out side than the cheap stuff. Think about it, filters and stuff that there bodies don’t need will not be absorbed just go in one part of there body and kicked right out the back! So you are only paying for you to have more to clean up later! If you get the good stuff, you will be cleaning up a lot less !!! AND they get what they’re bodies need to grow up with. I have had my puppies for 7 weeks. They were 10 Lbs when I got them. My larger puppy is now 38 Lbs and his brother is 31 ! The Vet is impressed with their health and growth. You get what you pay for and the auto shipping makes it a lot easier to keep a supply of food on hand. Can dog food from the same company/brand is added at lunch. I don’t mix it. Just place it on the top. Start with one big spoon full and as they grow and keep eating what you give them they won’t be walking away with leaving it to go to waste. (Do not leave wet dog food in there bowl ! That’s a good way to get them sick. Unused food must be refrigerated asap)
Bottom line: This has been a great food for them!
The people we got them from was using Blue B. And switch after we told her what our vet said to use. She switched again a week later to Sicence D. Dogs, especially puppies don’t do well switching food that quickly !!! It becomes a very runny mess! And they are not the happy guys you thought they would be. 3-4 weeks of slowly mixing your old brand with the new stuff and about every 5 days adding more of the new stuff will make things a lot happier for everyone.

I never heard of this brand before, but there are videos about what to look for in a dog food. And this brand meets ALL of the good stuff and NO grain !!! Stuff that they can’t use or break down inside of them.
I know that I have just given you a long winded way of saying that this is very good stuff! But it had been a very good choice for us.

My boston terrier puppy loves this stuff! It's healthy and it seems to give him quite a bit of energy. We've ordered the 25lb bag over two months ago and we're still going strong. He's gained the appropriate weight and he's always excited for meal time. My only tip is make sure you transition SLOWLY to this product if your puppy has been eating another food previously. The brand he was eating when we first got him wasn't quite as rich in nutrients or ingredients so when we first tried to transition him over we did so a little too quickly and his stomach was upset for a few days. After we purchased more of his old food and went back to half and half he hasn't had any issues and is fully off the old stuff but it did take a few weeks to get him to this point.

We rescued a 6 1/2 month old Border Collie mix from our local shelter and he was still struggling to kick a few parasites. This is the brand of dog food that the shelter feeds their animals and they recommended the continuous use until we were able to gradually integrate a new brand if we wanted. I like the Merrick brand and our dog doesn't seem to have trouble digesting it. He's not overly excited by food or treats in general, but if the food doesn't bother his stomach at this point, fantastic. Unfortunately, our local stores only sold the very small bags of the puppy formula at $19.99 a pop and I just couldn't keep up with that. This was our first order of dog food in the bulk size and we were just not successful. The the outer box was undamaged but the food bag had split at the bottom. Lots of kibble just floating around in the oversized shipping box. Hopefully we don't have this issue in the future.
