From the Publisher

This book has been written to foster a healthy, safe, and loving relationship between your child and a new puppy. The benefits of growing up with a dog are numerous. Children learn about compassion, kindness, and responsibility, and they gain companionship and lots of fun in return.
Here are just a few of the tips and training activities you'll find in this book
Crate training your puppy
A crate is a great place to leave your puppy when you can't watch her.
1. Start with your treats in one hand and your clicker in the other. Stand close to your puppy's crate.
2. Toss a treat into her crate.
3. Click when she steps into the crate and eats the treat.
4. Repeat this several times so that she can practice.
5. When she's very good at it, say "Go to bed" and then move your hand as if to toss a treat.
6. When your puppy steps into her crate, click and give her a treat.
Attention game
Teaching your puppy to pay attention to you is the most important skill of all. After all, you can't teach her anything if you don't have her attention.
1. Hold a treat in one hand and your clicker in the other.
2. Extend the hand holding the treat out to your side where the puppy can see it.
3. Be still and don't talk to your puppy. Just wait.
4. Your puppy will probably stare at your treat hand for a while, but then she'll glance over at your face.
5. As soon as she looks at you, click and give her the treat.
6. Keep practicing.
How to behave around dogs
It's tempting to hug, kiss, and squeeze a puppy. This kind of physical affection is normal for people, but not for dogs. It may make them feel trapped and uncomfortable. Many dogs learn to tolerate being hugged, but very few dogs really enjoy it. Instead of hugging, practice petting dogs with slow, smooth strokes.
Loose leash walking
No one likes to be dragged around by a dog. If you teach your puppy nice leash manners while she's small, you'll save yourself lots of aggravation when she's full grown.
1. Take treats and practice in your yard.
2. Whenever your puppy looks at you, give her a treat. This will teach her to check in with you often.
3. Try to keep the leash loose. If your puppy pulls, stop.
4. Wait for you puppy to loosen the leash, and then the two of you can move forward again.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book was essential in preparing our family for our first pet-a puppy! We read this at bedtime weeks leading up to our new arrival. It was super clear, informative, and had an attractive layout with great photographs. Lots of information on caring for a puppy and training. Parent boxes with tips for parents. Easy for kids to understand. Made for a great read aloud. I HIGHLY recommend this book if you have kids preparing for a puppy. Even as an adult, I loved the book and learned a lot. Excellent writing and presentation. We’re continuing to read it and go back for tips and training now that we have our pup!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI checked out a few different books on kids and puppies, as we got the first dog for our family. I had trained a dog before I had kids, but wanted advice on how to get kids and puppies to grow together. I wanted my kids (6&4) to understand a little dog "psychology" and this was the key. It has a great introduction to "how dogs think", a little test on using body language as communication since that's how dogs communicate, teaches the warning signs of a stressed dog so they know when to get an adult and some basic training tips. It really focuses on safety, preventing bites and aggression, and what to do in different situations. We read it slowly over a few weeks prior to getting Finley, and when she arrived the kids were ready and telling me what to do and not do! It made the transition to dog owner WAY easier.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseMy 11 year old was very excited over this book. He spent time everyday following the steps in the book with the puppies. The puppies weren't learning as fast as he was teaching and the pups weren't moving on to new lessons/tricks as quickly as the child was. Really?!
My child is not hyperactive and focuses very well on tasks. He understood the training methods in the book and easily repeated the process. The book falls short in adequately teaching the child patience and the reality of the time needed between lessons before a new skill should be introduced.
The book's lessons should be introduced by an adult over a period of time to avoid disappointment and discouragement in the child. The puppies enjoyed their lessons, but the book failed to teach the child the concept of the actual time necessary for each lesson. Kids and pets both need specific limitations.
I'm still looking for a training journal with the verbage & pictures to motivate a child. Kids respond to pictures, but they need a workbook of sorts that they can actively utilize to fairly track their own training efforts with pet responses.
If I planned on having to teach my child how to use extensive patience between expectations & how to know when to and when not to introduce new lessons, I didn't need to buy a book. I was hoping this book would give the child self-guidance through the process. Not even close! The pet owner/child has to first learn what's necessary as a trainer before encouraging them to begin a process the child is not prepared for. There are so many teaching/training basics the book never discusses.
Cute book, but ultimately falls short.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2016Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWe got this book for our 6yo (almost 7yo) daughter as a way of preparing her for getting a family puppy. She LOVED it and re-read it several times - often repeating back to us important points that she learned about dogs, positive reinforcement, dog body language, etc. She's a precocious reader, but the book has lots of illustrations and photos included, so I think it would engage children who aren't reading as independently as well. It was wonderful for helping prepare her for the realities of a puppy and the challenges they come with. We've now gotten our dog and had him home for 5 weeks (got him at 8 weeks old) and she still refers to this book often. It's been a great buy.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2019Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGood book for kids trying to train the brand new puppy in the house. (BTW, I then ordered the "Anger Control Workbook" for me). It's not related, just stating a fact. Apparently when the kids read it, they're like "did you know you have to feed the dog?" - they truly believe it and will now do it...but when I told them to feed the dog, they're like "I think she's fine". Seriously, it's a good book for kids to read and understand the responsibility of raising a dog.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseMy grandson saw the book before it was wrapped as a Christmas present and wanted it right away. They had gotten a puppy a few weeks earlier and he was desperately trying to get the dog to sit and stay. After reading the book, he had a more reasonable plan for training the puppy. He reads at an 11th grade level, so I was worried it might be too simple, but it was great for working on dog training.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2014Child: "I liked it because the author knew what she was talking about. Also my mom said that there were very good points to it. I love the pictures-they are way to cute." Mother: This book was great. I read it to my special needs son before undertaking any training with our puppy and he understood it to the point that he is correcting my husband when he does anything wrong with the pup. Well written, lots of easy to follow examples, tips on troubleshooting problems if training isn't quite going as expected. Great way to build a bond between your kids and the dogs- it puts the kids in an expert role with their friends and teaches them to respect the dog instead of saying "no" constantly. The book is based on positive rewards, clicker training, and making training a lot of fun. No hesitation with this book- when we finish reading it, we'll read it again!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI was hoping for something for age 7 and below to just teach kids how to treat a dog. However, this is an in-depth book ... looks like whoever wrote the book expects a lot from kids in the area of training a new dog.

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book was great to read with my 8 year old and 5 year old. They were able to understand how to approach puppies, and communicate with puppies much better after reading it. I also learned a lot as a first time dog owner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for first time owners
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI got this book as we are getting our first puppy in a few weeks. Being a complete novice & eventually giving in to getting my adult children a dog I got this book & it has lots of knowledge & is a wonderful learning tool too on how to raise a dog.
Plenty of important insights of dogs beahaviors, insights into how a puppy sees their new environment & very informative even for a novice like me.
For years we didn’t want to purchase a puppy because of the commitment & responsibility required, as we all have busy lives. But I have found this book so informative will be using it once our puppy arrives.
Will give back more feedback once we have puppy for a few weeks.
Would definitely recommend this book to all seeking to buy a puppy for their children & as a new member of your family.
Easy read & have learnt so much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI bought this for my 11 & 12 year old to read 3 weeks before our new puppy arrived. It has been great for them to learn everything they need to know independently, and prepare for the puppy. I'm very pleased with the purchase it has just enough detail without over complicating things.
